Mom is getting weirder and weirder. For the last couple of weeks—whenever she’s not at the college—she’s spent the days sleeping in her room, and then late at night she wanders around the house staring at the walls. I came downstairs around four in the morning last night to get something to drink and found her standing with her forehead on the big plate glass window mid-staircase. The moonlight was so faint I could barely see anything except the flimsy white cotton chemise she was wearing. I asked her what she was doing and all she said was “I can’t find her anywhere.”

Goose bumps ran up my back. “Find who?”

Nothing.

“Mom? Find who? Nellie?”

She shook her head and wouldn’t say anything else. I went back upstairs without my drink and crawled back in bed with J.D.

I don’t know what to do. When I talked to her this morning she seemed mostly normal—exhausted and cranky, but sane. I asked her if she remembered last night and she told me I must have been dreaming. I told J.D. about it and he thinks I should call someone, but who can I call? My grandparents are all dead. I could call Aunt Cindy, I suppose, but I barely know her, and even if I do call, what can she do? She lives in Los Angeles, and as far as I know, Mom and she haven’t spoken in years. Besides, Mom would fucking kill me if she found out I talked to her baby sister. She doesn’t have any close friends, either, and if I tell people she works with, someone like Walter the Icky Poet, she’d tear out my heart and eat it while I watched.

Shit. What do I do?
